Project 1A: Communicating Information: Key Skills

Mark Scheme: Notes Check list

Stage 1: What are you communicating?

What is the topic of your communications project?

What is the target audience of your project?
Hint: Use a specific target audience such as 5-10 year olds, 11-16 year olds or 18-24 year olds

Will you be making a slide show presentation, a booklet or a webpage?

What will go on each of the pages in your project?

Stages 2-3: Planning your page designs

layouts

Option 1 is the best layout for the title page as the curved text is the most appealing to an audience of 5-10 year olds.

When designing your alternative layouts ensure you have the following items in your publication:

Stage 4: Making a custom picture

Somewhere in your project you will have included an image that combines two other images. Use the internet to find two images you wish to combine.

You should refine your search criteria while conducting the search.  Use Boolean operator in the search.

Worked Example

I am looking for a cartoon style dog on a beach for my title page. First I searched for  a dog:

This search does not bring up any images that are appropriate to the target audience.

I refined the search to ~dog AND ~clipart:

The dog circled was the most appropriate for my target audience of 5-10 year olds.

I needed a beach to go in the background of the image so I searched for beach:

These images are good but I need something simpler for the background so I searched for simple AND beach:

The first image is appropriate as it is really basic so it won’t distract from the dog in the foreground and it is larger than the picture of the dog so it won’t have to be enlarged and hence it won’t distort.

I copied and pasted the image of the beach into paint and I copied and pasted the picture of a dog into a separate instance of paint:

I cleaned up the image of the dog by deleting everything in the image except for the dog. Some of the background pixels were cream not white so I made the whole background white.

The eyes and teeth of the dog needed to be converted to off white so they were not counted as transparent when I pasted the dog onto the beach:

I cropped the image of the beach so the two pictures would fit together without distorting.

The dog still had some white pixels around its outline and some regions within the picture were counted as transparent when they were not. I then cleaned the picture.

This was good but instead of a sun I wanted a moon so I drew one in:

I had to keep the gradient of the sky so I resized the sky surrounding the moon to fill in the area in the shadow. I also copied and pasted an extra cloud.

Stage 5: A trip to the library

As part of your publication you will be required to insert an extended piece of text. Write down the topic for this piece of text:
e.g. “How to look after a dog”.

Now list the sub-questions related to this topic:
For example:

Go to the library and find two books that contain answer these questions. Note the names of the books and the author. Or find suitable magazines in a shop or library.

Now complete and document the following tasks:

Stage 6: Making a table of numbers

This Stage you will make a table of numbers to go into your work. Open a spreadsheet to create your table in.
What will be in each column of the table?

Do not make your table like this:

Make it like this:

Now you need to edit you table of numbers. You can do this by converting the units of a particular column.

Now you must format the cells so they are the correct number type and are visually appropriate to the target audience.

Stage 7: Using Non-Internet Sources

Digital pictures/photographs

This is a non-internet IT source. You need to use at least one of these.
Document how you inserted a digital picture into your work.
Document how you formatted the digital picture; include:

Clip Art

This can be a non-internet IT source. You need to use at least one of these. When you use clip art in a product such as Office you have the option of turning off the internet clip art library:

Use a similar screen shot to show that you have used a non-internet source.

CD-ROMs

You may have access to clip art on CD-ROM or an encyclopaedia such as Encarta. These are less common than they were when the specification was devised (about 8 years ago) but some people still have them.

Stage 8: Hyperlinked Searches

Continue producing material for your booklet from suitable sources. Do this under a heading for each page such as ‘Material For Page 4’, etc.

Look at your searches from the picture exercise. Are you sure you have a multiple criteria search and two refined searches? Check this with your teacher. If you have two refined searches then you do not need to document any more searches as these will satisfy the project requirement.  If you do not have two acceptable refined searches then you will need to document either one more refined search or a hyperlinked search. A hyperlinked search is one where you use a link within a page to locate material that you want to use e.g. click ‘Sport’ within the BBC home page or click ‘Cricket’ within the BBC Sport home page. Document a hyperlinked search to go alongside the refined searches that you did earlier. A hyperlinked search is as follows:

Stage 9: First Draft

Stage 10: Second Draft,

Stage 11: Proof Reading and Third/Final Draft

Stage 12: Consistency

Say how you made your document consistent in things like fonts, colours and overall design. Body text and headings should be in the same font and size throughout a document. Consistency may also apply to your treatment of graphics, for example borders around images and the position of images in relation to text. In a PowerPoint presentation the font size may change in response to the number of words but the range of sizes should be small and the font should be the same unless there is a good reason to change it. PowerPoint offers consistency in layout and transitions/animation.

Additional Skills

Stage 13: Advantages and Disadvantages of Using ICT

For this stage you will need to write a page on the advantages and disadvantages of using ICT in the production of your work.

Stage 14: Health Risks of Using ICT

In this stage you will examine the health risks of using ICT. Select two ICT related health problems from the following list:

Document the symptoms of the condition and then list the measures you can take to prevent the problem.

Stage 15: Viruses

In this stage you will describe what a computer virus is and what can be done to prevent them.

Stage 16: A safe working environment

Research what makes a safe working environment when using a PC and write up your findings. Include pictures in your docum6+entation

Stage 17: Taking care of your PC

Write a short piece on how you can look after your PC. Answer the following questions:

Stage 18: Copyright

What does the copyright, design and patterns act mean in the context of your work?
Are there any copyright infringements in your work? (The answer should be no!)
How did you find out?

Stage 19: Backing-Up

Describe how you made a backup of your work.

Stage 20: Getting Help

Write about the possible sources of help you could use to solve general problems with your computer. Parents, peers, teachers, technicians, F1 Help, online forums. What type of problems did you encounter? E.g. printer not switched on, out of paper, out of toner, router not on, internet not working, lost file, damaged file.
