MS Publisher: A Six-Column Pamphlet on Two Sides of A4

To create a two-sided, there-column pamphlet proceed as follows.

Page Setup

Select File/Page Setup and check that the paper size is A4. Set the Orientation to Landscape (wide). The long axis of A4 is 297mm, which can make calculations tricky.

Select Arrange/Layout Guides and set all four margins to 1cm.

Still in Layout Guides click on the Grid Guides and increase the number of columns to 3.

Choose Insert/Pages and select 1. The second page should be formatted just like the first.

Place a guide 4mm to the left and 4mm to the right of the two guides you have already added. These additional lines provide guides for text boxes and images so they do not run into the next page (unless you choose to run them across the borders).

Columns

Note that the first column on page 1 is the second column of the pamphlet when folded. The middle column of page 2 is the last page and the left column of page 2 is the first (cover) page of the pamphlet.

Text boxes

Set the inner margins of text boxes to less than the width of the columns. To do this select a text box and choose Format/Text Box. Select the Text Box tab and change the Left and Right margins to 0.5cm.

Images

Find suitable images and copy them onto the canvas.

Printing

You can print the two pages of this document separately or, for the 'real thing' choose duplex mode to print on both sides.

Duplex printing: for the OKI A3 colour laser printer choose Printer Properties and under the Duplex options choose 'Short Edge'.

(Explanation: 'short edge' flips the page on the short edge of the page so the writing stays the same way up on both sides of the page; 'long edge' flips the page on the long edge of the page so the writing on the two sides runs in opposite directions. Use 'short edge' for a pamphlet where you want the text to run in the same direction on both sides; use 'long edge' for a document whose pages need text running in different directions such as one that has the binding across the top rather than down the side.)

Be sure to select Landscape again under 'Job Options', otherwise the page will revert to portrait and will not print correctly.
