Assessment in Computing

Class Work

Your teacher will observe your progress in class in order to give you a grade. Criteria for this will include:

Written work

This is assessed according to the skills and techniques required by each of four themes:

Communication

CM1: Communicate information using appropriate software; use basic formatting; make a post to a forum.

CM2: Enhance the communication potential of a piece of work by adding e.g. pictures, animation or design; use appropriate tools to communicate with an audience; make more than one post to a forum.

CM3: Make a plan for a piece of work and show improvement through stages of refinement; make a piece of work suitable for a target audience; make and use representations of knowledge; sustain an online discussion.

CM4: Use hyperlinks to structure information in a non-linear manner; choose tools independently for a given task; use styles or templates to control design; start an online discussion.

CM5: Create designs that may be adapted to different target audiences; use master pages or style sheets to control design across multiple pages; lead or develop an online discussion.

Data Modelling

DM1: Create a model that uses formulae and functions such as SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, MIN and MAX.

DM2: Use relative references and copy-drag in formulae; use numeric formatting such as currency and decimal places; use bar or column charts to illustrate trends in data.

DM3: Create and use what-if scenarios by changing data values; use absolute references; use pie charts to illustrate trends in data; use advanced formatting such as borders, backgrounds, margins and print layout.

DM4: Independently extend a model; create models that include LOOKUP functions; use constant values in a model; use X-Y or radar charts to illustrate trends in data; use more advanced functions such as IF, COUNTIF, MOD, QUOTIENT, ROUND, TRUNC.

DM5: Independently construct a realistic and fully functioning model.

Data Handling

DH1: Design and create data in a structured form such as a table; select appropriate data types and enter, amend and save the data.

DH2: Search and sort data using simple criteria.

DH3: Transform data into other forms such as charts, mail merges or catalogue merges.

DH4: Use some or all of the following techniques: validation rules; look up lists; complex searches; forms; reports; mail-merges.

DH5: Choose a brief, independently select and create an appropriate data-structure, collect data, produce outputs and create a user interface; question the reliability of data.

Control

CT1: Use sequences of commands and selection statements; manipulate symbols to create solutions to
problems.

CT2: Use loops and control statements; test & debug solutions.

CT3: Independently produce solutions to problems; formulate precise ways of doing things; use methods to change object properties; use variables in programs and subroutines.

CT4: Use data structures such as strings and arrays and appropriate control structures.

CT5: Choose appropriate tools to solve a specific problem; use parameters in functions.

Effort Grades in ICT

Effort grades in ICT are based on the following:

You should:

To get 1* you need to do well in all five. Four will get you 1; three will get you 2 and so on.
